Saqr bin Salem Al-Shabib is a Kuwaiti poet. He was born in Kuwait City from a poor family. He soon lost his parents when he was young, then he was stricken with an eye disease that lost his sight when he was seven years old. He lived as an orphan, poor, and blind. He resorted to writers and memorized the Qur’an. Then he was appointed to be kind to a wealthy man who admired his intelligence, so he sent him at his expense to Al-Ahsa to learn. He was He memorized what was read to him from Arabic literature, and he greatly admired Al-Ma'arri, so he memorized most of what he said, especially the obligatory words. He returned from Al-Ahsa and went around the mosques, reading to people and having contemporary literature read to him. He was impressed by Ahmed Shawqi, Al-Manfaluti, Hafez Ibrahim, and Al-Aqqad. His poetic talent blossomed and he became famous, prompting historian Abdul Aziz Al-Rashid to give him the title of Poet of Kuwait. In his writings, he calls for freedom and non-extremism, but those with hardened minds turned him on, so they hatched a plot to kill him, so some friends interceded for him, so he stayed at home until his death. He has a collection of poems, Saqr al-Shabab, compiled by Ahmad al-Bishr al-Rumi after his death, and most of his poems are eloquent Arabic poetry. The State of Kuwait named a primary school for boys in the Al-Qadisiyah area after him.
