Their story
Ágota Kristóf was a Hungarian-Swiss writer. Her works, written in a minimalist and unsparing language, not in her first language, Hungarian, but in the second language she learned as an adult, French, were translated into 36 languages by 2003. Her main work is the trilogy Le grand cahier / La preuve / Le troisième mensonge. In it and in Here (Yesterday), from a male narrator's perspective, she deals with writing as a struggle for survival, the loss of a confidant, the alienation in exile and the mixing of truth and lies in her native Hungary and in the lives of her Hungarian compatriots.
