Alexey Aleksandrovich Shakhmatov is a Russian philologist, linguist, historian and Slavist, the founder of the historical study of the Russian language, ancient Russian chronicles and literature. Academician of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society. Since January 1, 1901 - full state councilor.
