Ammar ben Lazaar

Ammar bin Abdullah bin Al-Tahir Al-Azaar Al-Qamari Al-Madani is generally known as Ammar bin Lazaar in the Maghreb language, an Algerian Maliki jurist and teacher from the fourteenth century AH/twentieth century AD. He was born in the town of Qamar, El Oued State, into a poor, religious family. He began memorizing the Qur’an at an early age in the town of Flyash, and when he was three years old, he moved with his father to the town of Sidi Okba, where he completed memorizing the Qur’an. He traveled to Tunis on foot in 1916 and joined the Great Mosque of Zaytouna. He graduated from the University of Zaytouna and obtained its degree in 1925. He began giving lessons in his hometown and was known for his reformist approach and his opposition to French authority. He was subjected to abuse, so he left his homeland in 1934 for Hijaz, settled in Medina, and taught officially at the Prophet’s Mosque, the School of Sharia Sciences, and Dar Al-Hadith Al-Madani. He left some manuscripts of his writings, investigations, and fatwas in his library, which were burned and nothing remained of them. He died in the city and was buried there.
