Benjamin Lee Whorf was an American linguist who was best known for the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which was named after him. He was a chemical engineer and fire insurance employee in Hartford, Connecticut. Benjamin Lee Whorf is best known for his work on American native languages, especially Hopi, and for his thesis of “linguistic relativity”. The latter states that the grammatical and lexical structures of one's own (native) language have an impact on thinking.
