Their story
Black Elk, in French Wapiti noir, born December 1, 1863 and died August 19, 1950, is a medicine man and a chief of the Oglalas (Sioux) Indian tribe. He was a little cousin of the famous Indian chief Crazy Horse. At the age of 13, he participated in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 and was wounded in 1890 during the Wounded Knee Massacre. In 1887 he traveled to England as part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and got lost in London, having to stay there for two years awaiting Buffalo Bill's return in 1889, in what he later described as a harrowing experience (in chapter 20 of the collection of memories published under the title Black Elk Speaks.
