Their story
Constantin Fahlberg was a Russian-born chemist. During a series of studies on compounds from coal tar that he carried out for Professor Ira Remsen (1846-1927) at Johns Hopkins University in 1877-1878, he discovered the sweet taste of anhydro-o-sulfamine benzoic acid, also called benzoic acid sulfimide, a chemical "body" to which he later gave the trade name saccharin.
