Their story
Gary Hemming, actually Gareth Hain Hemming, was an American mountaineer. He brought the ideas of big wall climbing practiced in Yosemite National Park to the great walls of the Alps. After a spectacular mountain rescue operation, he had hero status in the second half of the 1960s, especially in France, and was known to a large audience as “Beatnik of the Peaks”.
