Helmut Coing was an important German legal scholar and university professor in Frankfurt am Main as well as Chancellor of the Order Pour le Mérite for the Sciences and Arts for many years. The focus of his work was the history of European private law, especially in the Middle Ages, legal history in Germany and legal philosophy.
