James Dean
February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955 · Actor · United States
“Rebel without a cause, forever young.”
American actor whose three films made him the enduring emblem of restless youth before his life was cut short at twenty-four.
Be the first to light a candle.
Their story
James Byron Dean was born in Marion, Indiana, in 1931 and, after his mother's early death, was raised by an aunt and uncle on a farm in nearby Fairmount. He studied drama in California before moving to New York, where he worked in television, was admitted to the Actors Studio, and drew notice on Broadway in The Immoralist, which led directly to Hollywood.
Elia Kazan cast him as the yearning Cal Trask in East of Eden, released in 1955 to immediate acclaim. That same year he embodied a generation's unrest as Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause, and he completed his final role, the outsider Jett Rink, in the Texas epic Giant. Intense, instinctive, and modern, his acting brought a new emotional honesty to American film.
A passionate motorsport enthusiast, Dean died on 30 September 1955 when his Porsche collided with another car on a California highway as he travelled to a race. He was twenty-four. He became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination, honoured for East of Eden and again for Giant. His brief career left an outsized legacy: the eternal image of youth, defiance, and promise unfulfilled.
