Secretary General of the World Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church from 12 July 1979 to 24 April 1985. Proprefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples from 24 April to 27 May 1985. Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Urbaniana University from May 27, 1985 to April 9, 2001. Chairman of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses from October 23, 2001 to October 1, 2007. Cardinal Deacon with the titular deaconry of Gesu Buon Pastore alla Montagliola from May 25, 1985 to January 29, 1996. Cardinal-priest with the title of the Church of Santa Sabina since January 29, 1996.
