Their story
Kurt Ernst Carl Schumacher was a German politician, leader of the SPD from 1946 to 1952 and leader of the opposition in the German Bundestag from 1949 to 1952. Schumacher was instrumental in the reconstruction of the SPD in West Germany from 1945 to 1949 and was Konrad Adenauer's great opponent. Even though Schumacher was largely unable to assert his political ideas in the opposition in the long term, he was one of the founding fathers of the Federal Republic of Germany. What should be emphasized is his strict rejection of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), which significantly shaped the profile of social democracy in the Federal Republic.
