Their story

Milan Kundera was born in Brno in 1929, the son of a musicologist, and music echoes through the structure of his novels. He taught at Prague's film academy FAMU, where his students included future New Wave directors. His debut novel The Joke, published in 1967, dissected the absurdity of Stalinist Czechoslovakia and made him a central voice of the Prague Spring era.

After the 1968 invasion his books were banned and he lost his teaching post. In 1975 Kundera moved to France, was stripped of Czechoslovak citizenship in 1979, and became a French citizen in 1981. Novels written in exile, including The Book of Laughter and Forgetting and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, wove philosophy, politics, and intimacy into a form entirely his own.

Fiercely private, Kundera refused interviews for decades and eventually wrote in French, insisting he be read as a novelist, not a dissident. His Czech citizenship was restored in 2019, and his library returned to Brno. He died in Paris in 2023. His legacy is the modern European novel itself: skeptical, playful, and unafraid of the weight and lightness of being.
