Be the first to light a candle.
Their story
Miroslav Žbirka was born in Bratislava in 1952 to a Slovak father and an English mother, growing up bilingual and steeped in the British pop that would shape his sound. Nicknamed Meky, he co-founded the band Modus, where alongside Janko Lehotský and Marika Gombitová he helped write some of the defining Slovak pop songs of the 1970s.
After forming the band Limit and launching a solo career, Žbirka broke through nationwide. In 1982 he won the Czechoslovak Zlatý slávik poll as best male singer, famously interrupting Karel Gott's long reign. Songs such as Atlantída, Biely kvet, and Balada o poľných vtákoch became evergreens, their gentle Beatlesque craftsmanship setting him apart from the pop mainstream of the time.
Žbirka later settled in Prague, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and remained a cherished presence on stages in both successor states of Czechoslovakia. He died in Prague in 2021 after a battle with pneumonia. His legacy is a songbook that Czechs and Slovaks alike know by heart, proof that a quiet melody can outlast borders.
