Their story
Known by the pseudonym Madame Naciye or Naciye Hanım, Naciye Suman was the first Turkish Muslim woman to become a professional photographer. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, imperial titles were canceled and she had to choose a surname instead of Hanim. She chose Suman. After studying photography in Austria, she opened her own studio at home in 1919. Her clients were mostly women, for whom she photographed portraits and wedding photos. She later taught photography at the Sultan's palace.
