Nikolai Robertovich Erdman was a Soviet playwright and screenwriter, best known for his collaboration with director Vsevolod Mejerchold in the 1920s. His plays, especially Self-Murder, form a direct link between Gogol's satirical drama and the theater of the absurd in Russian literature.
