Ray C. Anderson, born July 28, 1934, died August 8, 2011, was an American entrepreneur. He was the founder and chairman of the board of the company Interface Inc., which is the world's largest manufacturer of modular carpets, and a leading manufacturer of fabrics. Anderson was known for his great involvement in environmental and sustainability issues, which was sparked in 1994 after he read Paul Hawken's book The Ecology of Commerce. Anderson defined sustainable development as "not taking anything from nature that is not directly renewable, as well as not harming the biosphere". He planned for Interface to be a sustainable company by 2020.
