Their story
Rōshi Robert Baker Aitken was a Zen master of the Harada-Yasutani lineage. Together with his wife he co-founded the Diamond Sangha of Honolulu, Hawaii in 1959. Aitken received the Dharma transmission from Koun Yamada in 1985, but decided to live as a layman. He was a socially committed Buddhist, having advocated throughout his career for social justice towards gays, women, and Native Hawaiians, and was one of the original founders of the Buddhist Brotherhood for Peace in 1978.
