Their story
The Santa Ana de Stazzema massacre was a war crime carried out during World War II by German soldiers on August 12, 1944 in the small Italian town of Stazzema in the Apuan Alps. During their retreat from Italy, the 35th Battalion of the 16th SS Panzergrenadier Division Reichsführer-SS, led by Hauptsturmführer Anton Galler, surrounded more than 500 residents and refugees, mostly women and children, in the town square of Stazzema, shooting them at random, finishing them off and burning their bodies in retaliation to the partisans of the Italian Resistance.
