Tina Turner

November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023 · Singer · United States / Switzerland

Simply the best

Singer whose volcanic voice and electrifying stage presence powered two extraordinary careers, earning her the title Queen of Rock 'n' Roll and one of music's greatest comeback stories.

Be the first to light a candle.

Their story

Anna Mae Bullock was born in 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, and began singing in church as a girl. In the late 1950s she joined Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in St. Louis, and as Tina Turner she became the incandescent centre of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, whose recordings of River Deep - Mountain High and Proud Mary made the duo international stars.

In 1976 she walked away from an abusive marriage with little more than her stage name, rebuilding her career through years of relentless touring. Her 1984 album Private Dancer sold millions worldwide, and What's Love Got to Do with It brought her the Grammy for Record of the Year at age 45. Through the following decades she filled stadiums across the globe, setting attendance records that stood for years.

Turner settled in Switzerland with her husband Erwin Bach and became a Swiss citizen in 2013. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2021, she died at her home in Kusnacht in May 2023, aged 83, after a long illness. Her resilience, generosity of spirit, and titanic performances made her a symbol of survival and reinvention for people everywhere.
